The first text has two parts: first, the question; second, the answer. In the answer there are three parts: first, marking; second, explaining; third, concluding. In briefly marking, there are three parts: first, general marking; second, separate enumeration; third, concluding the purpose. In the separate enumeration of the six, the first five are for the benefit and joy of sentient beings, and the last one is for the long endurance of the true Dharma. Among the first five: for the first two, people outside the Buddha-Dharma have doubts in their minds and do not give rise to resolute faith; for the next two, those who have already entered the Buddha-Dharma and rejoice in the Buddha-Dharma do not understand how to advance in cultivation; for the last one, those who have already advanced in cultivation are unable to realize and attain. This only asks about the cause, because this is what Subhūti wished to cultivate; hence it only asks about the two cultivated dharmas of lineage and realization mind-generation, not asking about the Buddha stage, or the stage of the Buddha fruit of liberation through renunciation that is sought in the minds of those bodhisattvas of the ten grounds who have already realized and attained.
