"The approach of higher and lower branches" refers to the general characteristic and the particular characteristics. The general characteristic is in front and is the higher branch; the particular characteristics are behind and are the lower branches. Wishing to distinguish that the two meanings—general and particular—differ like branches, they are called "branches." "The approach of gathering affairs": because the thirteen phrases gather the essential affairs of virtue of the bodhisattvas, it is called the approach of gathering affairs.
