All the virtues possessed by the two vehicles and bodhisattvas necessarily exist in reliance on good spiritual friends; hence it first explains relying on good spiritual friends. "In reliance on what mind": the first phrase explains that there is a basis of reliance above, while this phrase explains that there is benefit below. This is true of bodhisattvas, and the two vehicles also partake of it; thus the previous explanation of arhats in the section on the general and specific stated, "because they ought to lead the great assembly and teach and transform all, they are called 'worthy'," up to the fifteenth phrase, "because they ought to know in accordance with reality that fellow sentient beings attain all virtues, for the sake of benefiting all sentient beings." One should know that the two vehicles also have the mind to deliver those below. "In reliance on what wisdom" explains the third section heading on wisdom. Vyākaraṇa is a hidden, esoteric matter of the future, hence it is called "the secret wisdom of vyākaraṇa." The wisdom of the superknowledges refers to the five superknowledges, both of which take wisdom as their nature. Third, the wisdom of reality refers to undefiled wisdom and wisdom illuminating emptiness. "Practicing in reliance on what kind of objective realm, and what is able to be accomplished in reliance on what kind of objective realm" combines the fourth and fifth. "Should be known as being gathered by the three kinds of wisdom" combines the explanation of the fourth and fifth: the realms illuminated by wisdom explain the meaning of objective realms; giving rise to the three wisdoms in reliance on the realms illuminated by the three wisdoms is called "able to be accomplished." Question: Relying on what text does the treatise master explain these five sections? Answer: It is still in reliance on praising the bodhisattvas' virtues that he raises these five sections. In the earlier second cycle on the section of gathering activities praising the eighth, ninth, and tenth bhūmis, the tenth bhūmi only explained "turning the irreversible wheel of the Dharma"; from "making offerings to immeasurable hundreds of thousands of buddhas" to "able to save immeasurable hundreds of thousands of sentient beings," that text was not yet explained. Now, wishing to explain this sūtra text, it is opened into five sections. Arising in reliance on the basis of good spiritual friends corresponds to "making offerings to immeasurable hundreds of thousands of myriads of koṭis of buddhas." "In reliance on what mind" corresponds to "cultivating body and mind with great compassion." "In reliance on what wisdom" corresponds to "skillfully entering the buddha-wisdom and penetrating the great wisdom." "Reaching the other shore in reliance on what kind of objective realm" and "what is able to be accomplished in reliance on what" corresponds to "able to save immeasurable hundreds of thousands of sentient beings." Question: If these five sections are raised in reliance on praising the bodhisattvas' virtues, how do they explain the two vehicles? Answer: The two vehicles also have the meaning of relying above and delivering below, so they can be broadly explained.
