"Third, it is called the Great Vaipulya": "Vaipulya" (方廣) is a general name for the Mahāyāna, which precisely explains that this sūtra is "spoken as a Mahāyāna sūtra for bodhisattvas." Furthermore, both the text and the meaning of the Mahāyāna are vast (廣), hence it is called the Great Vaipulya (大方廣). In the explanation of this treatise text, it takes the breadth of the teaching specifically as "vast," hence it says "immeasurable Mahāyāna gateways," gateways meaning teachings. "Accomplished by maintaining them in accord with the faculties of sentient beings" explains the immeasurability of the Mahāyāna gateways. Because the faculties of Mahāyāna sentient beings are immeasurable, the Mahāyāna teachings are immeasurable; because the teachings are immeasurable and because the teachings can reveal the principle in accord with the capacities [of beings], it is called "maintaining."
