"Various contemplations" directly explains the varieties of number. That the Buddha emits light can also be "contemplated," which means "seen." Seeing those bodhisattvas and others in the east taking food and hearing the Dharma displays that sentient beings in the eighteen thousand lands have different kinds of contemplations; hence it is called "varieties of number of contemplations." "Briefly, there are four kinds of contemplation" explains "various contemplations." First, "food": this can also be taking the joy of dhyāna as food, or it can be the four kinds of food, such as coarse food. Second, it clarifies hearing the Dharma after having eaten. Third, practicing after having heard the Dharma. Fourth, practicing and attaining the fruit, which constitutes joy.
