1.230

言四攝法攝取者，布施攝之，今背惡向善為己眷屬；愛語攝之，今發菩提心；利行攝，令善根增長；同事攝之，令其成佛。如經所說當自推取者，前釋四眾中修行得道者示經處，今釋菩薩中行菩薩道，不示經處，但云如經所說當自推取也。所以爾者，前文略引之易，從後文廣引之難也。故經云「種種因緣、種種信解、種種相貌行菩薩道」也。每欲示其存略，故出此言。

Regarding "gathering through the four methods of gathering": gathering them through generosity causes them to turn away from evil toward good, becoming one's retinue; gathering them through affectionate speech causes them to generate the bodhicitta; gathering them through beneficial action causes their roots of goodness to increase; gathering them through sharing the same tasks causes them to attain Buddhahood. As for "As expounded in the sūtra, one should infer and grasp it oneself": previously, when explaining those practicing and attaining the Path among the four assemblies, he indicated the sūtra passage; now, when explaining practicing the bodhisattva path among bodhisattvas, he does not indicate the sūtra passage, but merely says, "As expounded in the sūtra, one should infer and grasp it oneself." The reason it is so is that it was easy to cite briefly from the preceding text, whereas it is difficult to cite extensively from the subsequent text. Thus the sūtra says: "Practicing the bodhisattva path with various causes and conditions, various faiths and understandings, and various appearances." Wishing always to indicate his omissions and abbreviations, he made this statement.
