"Asking one person..." and below is the second, resolving the doubts of the great assembly, which has two parts: first, the doubt and reflection of the great assembly; second, Maitreya's posing of the question. Now both of these are fully explained. Within the doubt and reflection of the great assembly, there are two parts: first, Maitreya's doubt and reflection. Now he only explains Maitreya, not the great assembly. Maitreya's doubt and reflection has three parts: first, asking what cause and condition prompted the Buddha to display the portents; second, seeking a person who can resolve the doubts; third, finding the master who can settle the queries. Thus he only explains the first and the last two. Regarding "asking one person": Mañjuśrī should belong to the third, explaining the finding of the master who can settle the queries; yet having this explanation at the very beginning is because the main method of this treatise is to grasp the intent of the text in explaining the sūtra. Although Maitreya's text spans three sections, his intention lies in asking Mañjuśrī; therefore, [the treatise] explains the intention of asking Mañjuśrī first. Why ask Mañjuśrī alone? This is the question.
