「為何等義」者，釋彌勒疑念云：以何因緣而有此瑞也？經云以何因緣，今云以何等義。義則是因緣，為現大相因故者。論主釋彌勒疑，則是答也。就文為二：初標現大相因、二章門。

"For what purpose?" explains Maitreya's doubtful reflection: "Due to what causes and conditions is there this portent?" The sūtra says, "Due to what causes and conditions?"; here it says, "For what purpose?" "Purpose" is cause and condition. "Because it is the cause for manifesting the great sign": the treatise master explains Maitreya's doubt, which is the answer. The text has two parts: first, presenting the cause for manifesting the great sign; second, the section headings.
