In explaining the cause, there are two causes: first, the direct cause; second, the auxiliary cause. The direct cause refers to all-knowledge; because of all-knowledge, one can see the events and marks of past ages. Furthermore, 'the auxiliary cause being complete refers to the manifold signs' explains the second, auxiliary cause. The term 'manifold signs' refers to the shaking of the earth, the raining of flowers, and the emitting of light being called manifold signs. Because past Buddhas, having manifested the manifold signs, manifested the great Dharma, now seeing Śākya[muni] manifest the manifold signs, he will likewise preach the great Dharma; thus the manifold signs are the cause of preaching the Dharma.
