He abides in various skillful means to deliver and liberate living beings; therefore it is called "abiding". In some recensions of the Treatise it is written with the character "going" (往). As for what is called "going": living beings are of two kinds: first, turning their backs on the Small and heading toward the Great is called "coming", like the poor son returning toward his native country until he finally reaches his father's house; second, turning their backs on the Great and heading toward the Small is called "going", also like the poor son turning his back on the house and leaving. The Buddha is also of two kinds: first, the saṃbhogakāya, which for the sake of living beings with great aspiration is called "coming"; second, the nirmāṇakāya, accomplishing living beings, like that elder holding a dung-removal vessel and going to where his son is. Now here, the eight phases of achieving awakening are precisely the meaning of "going"; hence it is called "the skillful means of going".
