The third perfection. Some say: 'mastery in the family of powers' takes 'family' as primary. 'Powers' refers to the ten powers; 'family' refers to the various virtues. These are of the category of the family of powers, hence called 'family.' As for 'mastery and pure subjugation,' the third is namely the various contemplations and reflections. 'Various contemplations and reflections' refers to the powers, fearlessnesses, and so forth, as listed above. The preceding two perfections transform two types of sentient beings, while now the third perfection, already possessing all merits, is therefore able to universally subjugate all sentient beings. Furthermore, the preceding two perfections benefit sentient beings whose faculties are ripe and not yet ripe, while now the third perfection subjugates all of the Tathāgata's afflictions. Therefore, the former explains the virtue of transforming others, while this one describes one's own virtue. Hence, the former headings distinguish persons so that we know it is transforming others, while the latter does not clarify persons so that we know it is one's own virtue.
