As for 'tathāgatagarbha,' when inside afflictions it is called tathāgatagarbha, and also called the womb of the Tathāgata. As for 'the unchangeable sense of the substance of the dharmakāya,' although it is within afflictions, it is not defiled by afflictions, hence called 'unchangeable.' The *Foxing lun* mentions three alterations of false dharmas to explain the meaning of being without alteration: first, alteration due to the exhaustion of retributions; second, alteration due to being broken by antidotes; third, alteration due to moment-by-moment cessation. The dharmakāya is free from these three faults: first, because it is tranquil before and after, there is no alteration due to the exhaustion of retributions; second, because it is undefiled, there is no alteration due to being broken by antidotes; third, because it is unconditioned, there is no alteration due to moment-by-moment destruction.
