From "Therefore, what was previously expounded as 'what kind of dharma'" onwards confers vyākaraṇa; within it are two parts: first, directly clarifying the six gates to distinguish the granting of vyākaraṇa; second, citing the previous five dharmas to substantiate the six gates. The first chapter is finished; now this is the second, citing proof to substantiate the six gates. As for why proof is cited, there are altogether two meanings: First, it comes to resolve doubts. The doubter asks: How do we know that this chapter on the direct expounding has six gates? Therefore it explains: Above, the Buddha clarified that the five dharmas encompass the six gates, therefore one should know that there are six gates. Second, clarifying the five dharmas recounts the Buddha expounding the Dharma for the sake of sentient beings. Now these six gates are also expounding the Dharma for beings, hence distinguishing the six gates. Next, it cites the five dharmas. In the text there are two parts: first, citing the five dharmas; next, encompassing the six gates with the five dharmas.
