問曰：經言一切善根皆成佛，云何但言發菩提心善方成佛耶？答：佛意雖修一切善，要須發菩提心也。又假一切善為發菩提心因緣耳，終須發菩提心也。菩提心者是佛心，發佛心方得成佛也。「尊者舍利弗說偈」，自上已來釋〈方便品〉竟。

Question: The sūtra says that all roots of goodness achieve Buddhahood; why does [the treatise] only say that the good of generating the bodhicitta alone achieves Buddhahood? Answer: Although the Buddha's intention is that one cultivates all goodness, it is necessary that one generates the bodhicitta. Furthermore, all goodness is merely relied upon as causes and conditions for generating the bodhicitta; in the end one must generate the bodhicitta. Bodhicitta is the Buddha-mind; only by generating the Buddha-mind can one achieve Buddhahood. "The Venerable Śāriputra spoke in verse": from above until now, the explanation of the "Skillful Means Chapter" is concluded.
