難意云：聲聞若不成佛，云何虛妄為之受記？是故先釋云：以如來法身與聲聞法身平等無異故與受記，非是虛妄。問：前云得決定心故與受記，後明依佛性平等故與受記。此二何異？答：前是緣因，後是正因。又前是引出佛性，後是自性住佛性。所以為異。

The import of the difficulty is: if śrāvakas do not attain buddhahood, how could vyākaraṇa be falsely conferred upon them? Therefore it was first explained: because the dharmakāya of the Tathāgata and the dharmakāya of the śrāvakas are equal and without difference, vyākaraṇa is conferred upon them; it is not false. Question: Previously it was said that vyākaraṇa is conferred because they attain a resolute mind, and later it is clarified that vyākaraṇa is conferred relying on the equality of buddha-nature. What is the difference between these two? Answer: The former is the contributing cause; the latter is the primary cause. Furthermore, the former is the buddha-nature brought forth, while the latter is the inherently abiding buddha-nature. This is how they differ.
