First, the heading presents the bodhi of the Dharma Buddha. "Dharma" is precisely the dharma of thusness of the naturally pure nirvāṇa. The very substance of thusness has the meaning of awakening; hence it is called "Buddha." What is supremely subtle, empty, and pervasive is termed the "Path" (mārga), and the Path is bodhi. "The naturally pure nirvāṇa of the tathāgatagarbha" sets forth the essence of the bodhi of the Dharma Buddha; sūtras and treatises differ on this. Other sūtras say: "When concealed, it is called the tathāgatagarbha; when revealed, it is called the dharmakāya." This treatise specifically takes the tathāgatagarbha to be the dharmakāya, and when revealed, it is called the retribution body. Regarding "naturally pure nirvāṇa," there are two kinds of nirvāṇa: first, naturally pure; second, pure through skillful means. Original purity of nature is called naturally pure; cultivating skillful means to sever afflictions and attain purity is called pure through skillful means. Here, naturally pure nirvāṇa is the bodhi of the Dharma Buddha, while purity through skillful means belongs to the retribution Buddha. These two purities are precisely the defiled thusness and undefiled thusness of the Mahāyānasaṃgraha. "Permanent, cool, and unchanging" sets forth the essence of naturally pure nirvāṇa. The substance of this naturally pure nirvāṇa is permanently abiding; therefore it is said to be "permanent." The Mahāyānasaṃgraha states: "'Purity' is clean; 'coolness' is bliss." These are the two virtues of purity and bliss, hence it says "cool." It also says: "'Purity' is with remainder; 'coolness' is without remainder." It is appropriate to use the former meaning to explain this text. "Unchanging" is explained as above.
