In the Hīnayāna, the body is reduced to ashes and consciousness extinguished, genuinely entering into [nirvāṇa] without remainder; this is a nirvāṇa that is surpassed. Here, for the sake of the deranged children, it is expediently said that [the Buddha] has perished; the nirvāṇa of the three virtues is in reality not permanent extinction, and is therefore unsurpassed. Above, the explanation of unsurpassed bodhi referred to the meaning of the fruit; here, the explanation of unsurpassed nirvāṇa refers to the meaning of the fruit of the fruit. Both are identical in intent with the *Nirvāṇa-sūtra*. Yet those in the past who interpreted the *Lotus Sūtra* in terms of impermanence or as permanence with concealed characteristics—how mistaken they were!
