"As for 'eight rebirths and a single rebirth'" brings up the first clause of the sūtra. From "it means that all ordinary beings" onward, it explains the sūtra, clarifying that bodhisattvas in the stages prior to the bhūmis are ordinary beings; having heard the *Lotus Sūtra*, according to the shallowness or depth of their capacity, they enter the first bhūmi after undergoing eight rebirths, down to entering the first bhūmi after undergoing a single rebirth.
