Self-reproach altogether lists six phrases: First, not seeing the Buddha, which means Śāriputra only encountered Aśvajit, and at that time did not see the Buddha. Second, not going to the Buddha's place means that when he encountered Aśvajit, he did not go to the Buddha's place. Third, not hearing the Buddha preach the Dharma means that when he encountered Aśvajit, he heard the teaching of the three truths and attained the path, never hearing the Buddha preach the Dharma. Fourth, not making offerings means that when he encountered Aśvajit, he did not make offerings to the Buddha. Fifth, not revering means that when he encountered Aśvajit, he had not revered the Buddhas. Sixth, having no deeds of benefiting sentient beings means that when he encountered Aśvajit, he had no mind to benefit beings and no beneficial deeds. The first five clarify the lack of an upward-seeking mind; the latter one clarifies the lack of a downward-benefiting mind. Regressing regarding unobtained dharmas means: he should have obtained the six matters mentioned above, but he only seized the small fruit and ultimately did not obtain them; therefore it is called "regressing."
