These four lines are called the accomplishment of the adornment of the merits of the gate of great meaning. "Gate" means the gate providing access to the great meaning. "Great meaning" refers to the purpose of the Mahāyāna. Just as when a person builds a city, finding the gate they may enter; if a person attains rebirth in [the Land of] Peace and Bliss, this is the accomplishment of the gate of the Mahāyāna. Why did the Buddha originally arouse this vow? He saw that in some lands, although there are the assemblies of the Buddha, Tathāgatas, sages, and worthies, because of the land's turbidities, the one is divided to preach three; or a knitted brow incurs reproach, or a pointed word invites blame. Therefore he made the vow: "May my land be entirely of the single flavour of the Mahāyāna, of the single flavour of equality, where ruined roots and seeds are ultimately never born, and even the names of women and the disabled are severed." Therefore it is said: "In the realm of the Mahāyāna roots of good, / all are equal, without names of blame or reproach; / women and those with defective sense-faculties, / and the seeds of the two vehicles are not born."
