What is this sequence? The preceding seventeen phrases are the accomplishment of the merits of the adornment of the land. Having understood the marks of the land, one should understand the master of the land; therefore, next one contemplates the Buddha's adornment of merits. How is that Buddha adorned? Where does he sit? Therefore, first one contemplates the seat. Having understood the seat, one should know the master of the seat; therefore, next one contemplates the Buddha's adornment of bodily action. Having understood bodily action, one should know what reputation he has; therefore, next one contemplates the Buddha's adornment of verbal action. Having understood his renown, one should know the reason for attaining this name; therefore, next one contemplates the adornment of mental action. Having understood that the three actions are complete, he should be the great master of humans and devas; who is capable of receiving his transformation? Therefore, next one contemplates the merits of the assembly. Having understood that the assembly has immeasurable merits, one should know who is the leader; therefore, next one contemplates the leader. The leader is the Buddha. Having known the leader, lest one suspect an equality of seniors and juniors, next one contemplates the master. Having known that he is the master, what superior power does the master possess? Therefore, next one contemplates the adornment of sustaining power that does not act in vain. The sequence of the eight phrases is thus completed.
