2.154

Prajñā is the name of the wisdom that penetrates suchness. Skillful means is the designation for the knowledge that masters the provisional. Penetrating suchness, the mind's activities are extinguished in tranquility; mastering the provisional, one thoroughly perceives the capacities of all beings. The knowledge that perceives capacities responds completely yet has no deliberate knowing; the wisdom extinguished in tranquility likewise has no deliberate knowing yet perceives completely. Thus, wisdom and skillful means act in mutual dependence and are still in mutual dependence. Acting without losing stillness is the efficacy of wisdom; being still without abandoning action is the power of skillful means. Therefore, wisdom, compassion, and skillful means gather in prajñā. That prajñā gathers in skillful means should be known means: one should know that wisdom and skillful means are the father and mother of a bodhisattva. If one does not rely on wisdom and skillful means, the bodhisattva's Dharmas will not be accomplished. Why is this? If one lacks wisdom, when acting for sentient beings one falls into inversion; if one lacks skillful means, when contemplating the nature of phenomena one realizes the limit of reality. Therefore, this should be known.
