The Dharma attained by a Buddha is named anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi; because of attaining this bodhi, one is named Buddha. Now it is said that one quickly attains anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, which means one quickly becomes a Buddha. 'A' means un- [or non-]; 'nuttara' means surpassed; 'samyak' means correct; 'sam' means complete [or all-pervading]; 'bodhi' means the Path; translated collectively, it is called the Unsurpassed Correct and Complete Path. 'Unsurpassed' means that this Path exhausts principle and plumbs nature, with nothing exceeding it. Why is this said? Because it is correct. 'Correct' is noble wisdom. Because it is known in accordance with the characteristics of phenomena, it is called correct wisdom; because the nature of phenomena has no characteristics, noble wisdom has no deliberate knowing. 'Complete' has two kinds: first, the noble mind completely knows all dharmas; second, the Dharma-body completely pervades the Dharma realm; whether in body or in mind, there is nothing it does not pervade. 'Path' is the unobstructed path. A sūtra says: 'Unobstructed people in the ten directions leave birth-and-death by a single path.' 'A single path' is the single unobstructed path. 'Unobstructed' means knowing that birth-and-death is precisely nirvāṇa. Such are the unobstructed characteristics of entering the non-dual Dharma gate.
