These four lines are called the accomplishment of the adornment of empty space merits. Why did the Buddha originally give rise to this adornment? He saw that there are lands where smoke, clouds, dust, and fog obscure the great expanse of space; thunderous clashes and driving downpours fall from above; and inauspicious portents and ominous mists constantly descend from the sky, causing one hundred kinds of anxiety and making the hair stand on end. Seeing this, the Bodhisattva gave rise to the heart of great compassion: 'May my land have precious nets interlaced, covering empty space everywhere, with bells and chimes sounding the notes of gong and shang to proclaim the Dharma, so that beholding them brings no weariness, and harbouring the Way allows one to see virtue.' Therefore it is said: 'Countless jewels interlace; / Netting covers empty space everywhere. / Various bells ring out, / Proclaiming the wonderful sounds of the Dharma.'
