Question: The Sūtra of Immeasurable Life says: 'Those who vow to be reborn all attain rebirth; excluded only are those who commit the five heinous crimes or slander the True Dharma.' The Contemplation Sūtra of Immeasurable Life says: 'Those who commit the five heinous crimes and ten unvirtuous actions, fully possessing all unwholesome deeds, also attain rebirth.' How are these two sūtras reconciled? Answer: One sūtra refers to possessing both kinds of grave sins: first, the five heinous crimes, and second, slandering the True Dharma. Because of these two sins, they do not attain rebirth. The other sūtra only speaks of committing sins such as the ten unvirtuous actions and the five heinous crimes, without mentioning slandering the True Dharma. Because they do not slander the True Dharma, they therefore attain rebirth.
