The virtues of the Buddhas and Tathāgatas are immeasurable; because their virtues are immeasurable, their virtuous titles are also immeasurable. If one wished to speak of them completely, paper and brush could not contain them. Therefore, various sūtras either raise ten names or proclaim three titles, merely preserving the ultimate principle; how could this be exhaustive! The so-called three titles are precisely these: Tathāgata, Arhat, and Samyaksambuddha. 'Tathāgata' means understanding in accordance with the true nature of phenomena and preaching in accordance with the true nature of phenomena; coming along the secure path of the Buddhas, this Buddha also has come thus, never again departing into future existence; hence the name Tathāgata. 'Arhat' means one worthy of offerings. The Buddha has completely eliminated the fetters and attained all wisdom; he is worthy of receiving offerings from all beings in heaven and earth; hence he is called Arhat. 'Samyaksambuddha' means knowing that the reality of all phenomena is an indestructible characteristic, neither increasing nor decreasing. How is it indestructible? Where mental activity ceases and the path of speech is transcended, all phenomena are unmoving like the characteristic of nirvāṇa; hence the name Samyaksambuddha. The meaning of 'Unhindered Light' is explained as in the previous verse.
