A person possessing wisdom is therefore called a wise person. One who has wisdom can judge right and wrong and distinguish benefit and harm. Knowing that precepts and mindfulness are beneficial and not harmful, they restrain them and do not follow them. Knowing that sense faculties and desires are harmful and not beneficial, they hold them like thieves. The treatise says: "These are heavy obstacles," and therefore one does not let them run wild. Below, light obstacles are shown. "Even if they are indulged" refers to the subtle obstacles of habitual tendencies; even if there are sense faculties and desires, they are not deliberately stirred up. As for "before long one will see them completely perish," how is seeing established? It is spoken based on the time when they are seen. By analogy to impermanence, they must inevitably return to destruction.
