若離慚恥則不能持戒，戒不淨故定不成，定不成故慧不發。三者俱無，則世間出世間功德從何生耶？故失功德耳。

If one is detached from shame and conscience, one cannot uphold the precepts. Because the precepts are not pure, concentration is not achieved; because concentration is not achieved, wisdom does not arise. When all three are lacking, from where could mundane and supramundane meritorious virtues arise? Therefore, [the text says] one loses meritorious virtues.
