"Śākya" is translated here as "Capable of Benevolence", which is the clan surname. "Muni" is translated here as "Silent Sage", which is the style name. Hence Aśvaghoṣa's treatise states: "'Capable of Benevolence', due to the nobility of the family clan, is the particular characteristic. 'Silent Sage', due to the purity of his own essence, is the universal characteristic. Both universal and particular are unified solely by the Buddha; it is one of the ten titles." Thus "Capable of Benevolence" pertains to phenomena as particular, while "Silent Sage" pertains to principle as universal. The Buddha subsumes both universal and particular, and principle and phenomena harmoniously penetrate; is this not the Great Awakened One alone? Thus the Great Awakened One is taken as the Great Dharma Master.
