First, this cures the obstacle of attachment to non-self, which is the three samādhis. “Quietude” indicates the emptiness of the non-self of dharmas. “Unconditioned” indicates signless emptiness. “Peace and joy” indicates wishless emptiness, being without grasping and discarding. “Leaving clamor behind” cures the obstacle of ‘what belongs to self.’ The five aggregates arise in turmoil without sequence. The ‘crowd’ (眾) is indeed what belongs to self. Hence the text below says: “One should abandon one’s own crowd and other crowds; due to crowds there is clamor.” “Dwelling alone in a secluded place” cures the obstacle of those two having no signs; that is, cultivating the three samādhis. However, for one who forgets thoughts of coming and going, the marketplace and court are like rivers and lakes; for one whose feelings are tied to saṃsāra, mountains and forests are still shackles. Now beginners are admonished that they ought to seek secluded quietude, so that the path of contemplation may be easily accomplished. “Revered by all the devas” cures the obstacle of lacking foremost virtue. A quiet place is a venerable dharma, being foremost among all wholesome dharmas; hence it can be revered by Śakra Devānām Indra and all the devas. “Śakra Devānām Indra,” in full Śakra-Indra, here is translated as “Capable Lord,” meaning that he is capable of being the lord of the heavens. Dwelling on the summit of Mount Sumeru, it is the second heaven of the desire realm.
