1.28

本論約白淨法二種釋之，此句則涅槃白淨法；上句初轉法輪則道場白淨法。須跋陀羅，此云好賢，或云善賢，外道名也。住鳩尸那城，年一百二十，聞佛涅槃方往佛所，聞八聖道，心意開明遂得初果，乃從佛出家。又為廣說四諦，即成羅漢。

The basic treatise explains this in terms of two kinds of pure dharmas; this phrase is the pure dharma of nirvāṇa, while the preceding phrase "first turning the dharmacakra" is the pure dharma of the bodhimaṇḍa. "Subhadra" is translated here as "Fine and Worthy" or "Good and Worthy", which is the name of a non-Buddhist. He lived in the city of Kuśinagara at the age of one hundred and twenty. Hearing that the Buddha was entering nirvāṇa, he only then went to the Buddha's place. Hearing the eightfold noble path, his mind opened and became clear, and he thereupon attained the first fruit, subsequently leaving the household life under the Buddha. Then [the Buddha] extensively expounded the four truths for him, and he immediately became an arhat.
