A “crowd” means four or more people. “One’s own crowd” refers to one’s own disciples and fellow students; “other crowds” can be understood accordingly. Abandoning them is being free from self and what belongs to self, so that they no longer accumulate and arise. “Dwelling alone in a quiet and secluded place” means that with skillful wisdom accomplished, one dwells according to the Dharma. “Contemplating the extinction of the root of suffering” means that with wisdom of excellent discernment accomplished, one is secluded from the causes of arising. The Lotus [Sūtra] says: “The cause of all sufferings has greedy desire as its root.”
