Diligence remedies the obstacle of indolence lacking the skillful means of cultivation. Therefore, indolence is of three kinds: first, indolence of insecurity; second, indolence of lack of flavor; third, indolence of not knowing dread. How does cultivation remedy each one? By showing diligent cultivation, moderating food and sleep, and regulating ānāpāna. Diligently cultivating, one perceives that the absorptions possess the virtues of superknowledges and wisdom, exhaust the root of suffering, and are greatly rare matters. Diligently cultivating, one observes the suffering of birth, old age, sickness, and death, and the suffering of the four evil destinies, recognizing: 'I have not yet been able to escape suffering.' This is the diligence that serves as the remedy.
