〔補註〕草木有命者，外人以有知為命，如來以有生為命也。草木有生而無知，有生者不宜殺，以此順世，非順其有知也。

[Supplementary note:] As for "grass and trees have life": outsiders take having consciousness as life, while the Tathāgata takes having growth as life. Grass and trees have growth but lack consciousness; that which has growth should not be killed, and by this he accorded with the mundane, not that he accorded with their having consciousness.
