小乘訓世凡五十年，今將涅槃更略教誡，故云最後。論云「於住持法中勝，以其遺教故」也。
Teaching the world with the Hinayāna lasted for fifty years altogether; now, about to enter nirvāṇa, he briefly gives instruction once more, hence calling it 'final'. The treatise says: 'It is supreme among the maintained teachings because it is his bequeathed teaching.'
