1.70

戒是正順者，正以揀邪、順不違理，則是逆生死流、順涅槃流也。解脫之本者，有餘、無餘二種解脫以戒為基，故云為之本。波羅提木叉者，牒名證義，以木叉翻解脫故。此顯戒名木叉，從果立稱也。

"The precepts are what properly accord" means that "proper" distinguishes them from the heterodox, and "accord" means not transgressing the truth; this goes against the stream of saṃsāra and accords with the stream of nirvāṇa. "The foundation of deliverance" means that the two kinds of deliverance, with remainder (sopadhiśeṣa) and without remainder (nirupadhiśeṣa), have the precepts as their basis, and hence they are called the foundation. "Prātimokṣa" takes up the name to confirm its meaning, because mokṣa is translated as deliverance. This reveals that the precept is named mokṣa by taking its title from the result.
