五根者，各能生識，故並名根。而不言意者，論云「示現色非色別故。」
"The five sense faculties" are each able to produce consciousness, and so they are all called faculties. As for why the mind faculty (manas) is not mentioned, the treatise says: "Because it illustrates the distinction between material and immaterial."
