[Supplementary note:] Medicine is used to relieve illness, yet it is said to be inappropriate because of seeking profit with an improper mind. There are two kinds of improper minds: first, not knowing the heavenly decree and vainly hoping to prolong life; second, killing living creatures to make medicine, benefiting humans while harming creatures. Both are called improper minds, and to seek profit through them makes the transgression even greater. When one has not yet ascended to the fifth ground, one should simply investigate the one mind, having no leisure for such things.
