"Namely, through contact with the hand […] tormented and ruined as if struck by an arrow": This is the answer. That is, that material dharma is transformed and deteriorated precisely through contact with the hand, and so forth down to contact with mosquitoes and the like. Although the five sense organs and visible form, sound, odor, and taste are not directly contacted by the hand and so forth, they arise within the same aggregate as that tangible; when the tangible is contacted, they are transformed and deteriorated. Or it may be that contact with their creating four great elements causes the derived matter to also be transformed and deteriorated; therefore, this transformation and deterioration means that it can be afflicted and ruined by another. Thus, in the Arthavargīya compiled by Dharmatrāta, it is stated: When a person who seeks after the five sense objects of desire constantly gives rise to yearning, if those objects of desire are not fulfilled, their matter is caused to deteriorate, just like a poisoned arrow within the body. The five sense fields such as visible form are desires because they are what is desired, or because they can produce desire. As for 'Arthavargīya', it is because this chapter explains various meanings (artha). Hence the Vibhāṣā, fascicle 44, states: 'The Bodhisattva Śākyamuni spoke this verse for King Bahuprapañca,' as explained extensively there.
