"The verse says ... each arises in two locations": the explanation. "Well-proportioned" (śobha) has two explanations: the first explanation is to make the body well-proportioned, which has a flaw. The second explanation is to make the consciousness well-proportioned, which is unproblematic. The tongue and body are large in form and their function in generating consciousness is sufficient, so two are not needed. Furthermore, the *Mahāvibhāṣā*, fascicle 13, says: "Question: Why do the eye, ear, and nose each have two locations, while the tongue and body have only one? Answer: The locations of the material sense-bases are for beautifying the body. If there were two tongues, that would be ugly, and the world would ridicule it: 'Why does this person have two tongues, like a venomous snake?' If there were two bodies, that would also be ugly, and ridiculed by the world: 'Why does one person have two bodies, like two fingers side by side?'"
