Regarding [the text from] “The treatise says …” to “… establishing the sequence of the skandhas,” this clarifies the sequence in terms of following coarseness. Because form possesses resistance, it is the coarsest among the five skandhas; therefore it is explained first. Among the four formless [skandhas], only the operational mode of feeling is coarse; thus worldly people say, ‘My hand hurts,’ and so forth—hurting being painful feeling—without mentioning conception and the rest; hence it is explained first among the four. Among the latter three, relative to formations and consciousness, the conception skandha is the coarsest. Because the conception of male, female, and so forth is easy to know, it is explained first among the three. Among the latter two, formations are coarser than consciousness; because greed and so forth are easy to comprehend, [formations] are explained first between the two. Among the five skandhas, consciousness is the most subtle, its general characteristics being difficult to distinguish; therefore it is explained last.
