Regarding "The verse says: [...] the basis for the birth of sentient beings": An explanation. The Sarvāstivādins transmit the tradition that the space element (ākāśa-dhātu) takes light and darkness as its substantial entity, which is a distinction of colour/visible form (varṇa-rūpa), and its substantial entity is also real. The author of the treatise does not believe that the space element is real, hence he says "they transmit the tradition" (paramparā-kathita). In reality, it also extends to radiance and shade. Radiance and light are a pair: light is light, radiance is heavy; singling out light is mentioning the lighter to reveal the heavier. Shade and darkness are a pair: shade is light, darkness is heavy; singling out darkness is mentioning the heavier to reveal the lighter. This is an elliptical reference mutually indicating both. However, when the *Nyāyānusāra* says "tradition says it is radiance and darkness", this treatise mentions light and darkness by cross-pairing the light and heavy, whereas the *Nyāyānusāra* exclusively mentions the two heavier ones; thus there is no contradiction.
