Taking occasion from this sense briefly to explain the different expansions and combinations of Abhidharma: herein there are two parts: first, directly explaining the expansions and combinations; second, briefly explaining the names. Within directly explaining the expansions and combinations, there are again two kinds: first, explaining increase according to numbers; second, explaining gradual increase. Within increase according to numbers, there are again four kinds, namely: one kind of onefold, two kinds of twofold, three kinds of threefold, and four kinds of fourfold. As for the one kind of onefold: it means that Abhidharma takes all phenomena as its essential nature. The reason the treatises do not mention space and uncalculated cessation is that these two are not subsumed under the truths, are not subsumed under the fruit, and do not serve as objects for undefiled wisdom. As for the two kinds of twofold: the first twofold is: (1) ultimate Abhidharma, which refers to the undefiled five skandhas; (2) conventional Abhidharma, which refers to the defiled five skandhas. Since both of these are "phenomena capable of facing," they are called Abhidharma, as stated in this treatise. The second twofold is: (1) objective Abhidharma, where the object refers to the object of the four truths; (2) fruitional Abhidharma, where the fruit refers to nirvāṇa. Since both of these are "phenomena that are faced," they are called Abhidharma, as also stated in this treatise. As for the three kinds of threefold: the first threefold is: (1) intrinsic-nature Abhidharma, which refers to undefiled wisdom; (2) attendant Abhidharma, which refers to the phenomena associated with and co-arising with wisdom; (3) provision Abhidharma, which refers to the four defiled wisdoms, the attendants of wisdom, and the various treatises as essential nature, as stated in this treatise. The second threefold is: (1) ultimate Abhidharma, (2) conventional Abhidharma, and (3) Abhidharma as what is faced, all as explained before.
