"Having seen forms, etc.... because faculties and objects are fixed": this is written because of the concern that, clinging to the sūtra words "having seen a form with the eye, one gives rise to an exploration of gladness toward forms that accord with gladness," and so forth, one might think that after seeing a form, giving rise to an exploration of gladness toward sounds that accord with gladness is not included within mental exploration. To make clear that it includes them comprehensively, there is this text. After seeing a form and the like, to give rise to gladness, grief, or equanimity toward sounds and the like is also a mental exploration. Fearing the objection that this contradicts the sūtra, the text resolves it in advance: it is to avoid confusion that the sūtra spoke in this way, with words such as "having seen," because within it, faculties and objects are established definitively. That is, objects such as form are seen by the eye faculty and comprehended by the mind.
