「謂生欲界至唯染污故」者，答。謂生欲界未得色善，成欲十八。初、二定各八，謂四染喜、四染捨。三、四定，四染捨。無色界，一染捨。成上唯染，故不緣下。

"That is, one born in the desire realm... because they are solely defiled": this is the answer. That is, one born in the desire realm who has not yet attained form-realm wholesome roots possesses the eighteen of the desire realm. In each of the first and second dhyānas, one possesses eight, namely four defiled gladnesses and four defiled equanimities. In the third and fourth dhyānas, four defiled equanimities. In the formless realm, one defiled equanimity. Those higher ones possessed are solely defiled, and therefore do not take lower realms as objects.
