Regarding 'Just as a sūtra states [...] "arising" refers to intermediate existence': This cites a sūtra to further prove that 'arising' is intermediate existence. As a sūtra states: 'There is the arising of an impermanent, destructible self-substance; there is the birth of an impermanent, destructible world.' 'Arising' refers to the intermediate existence, and 'birth' refers to the birth-existence. 'Self-substance' and 'world' are their general designations. In order to clarify that the intermediate existence truly exists, it is designated by 'self-substance'. For birth-existence, fearing that people might cling to it as permanent, its fault is made evident through 'world'. Another explanation: they mutually illuminate each other by complementary expression. Another explanation: the intermediate existence is subtle in aspect, so it is designated by 'self-substance'; the birth-existence is manifest in aspect, so it is designated by 'world'.
