"The treatise says:... the initial connecting intermediate existence" explains the first three lines. In these six states, by the nature of dharmas only mental consciousness is admitted, not the other five consciousnesses, because they lack the capacity. The word 'birth' spoken here not only subsumes the initial mind of rebirth-existence (upapatti-bhava), but should be understood to also subsume the initial mind of intermediate existence (antarā-bhava). If one speaks of rebirth-existence, it does not apply to intermediate existence. If one merely speaks of 'birth', it applies to the initial moment of intermediate existence, as when demising from an upper realm and being born in a lower realm, the initial moment of intermediate existence is also called 'birth'. The main intention here was to clarify which consciousness manifests at the stage of a sentient being's death, but because the meaning is related, the remaining five are discerned in addition. Below, birth is explained separately, and one should understand it accordingly.
