[On the Kośa's statement:] "If all defilements [were ignorance, then it would not be separately mentioned in the context of the fetters, etc.... and it would not be designated by the general name]": this individually demonstrates the error, refuting it with the same reasoning as before. In the context of the nine fetters and so forth, ignorance is stated separately, so we clearly know that ignorance is not a collective designation. Moreover, if ignorance were all defilements, it should not be associated with view, etc., because [a dharma] is not associated with itself. In the sūtra, it should have been stated that ignorance defiles the mind, and it should not have been said that lust defiles the mind, since ignorance would be broader and would also subsume lust. If you claim that in this sūtra, lust defiling the mind is spoken of in terms of a specific distinction, then regarding the defiling of wisdom, the general name of ignorance should not have been used; it should also have been spoken of in terms of a specific distinction.
