10.39

「隨所立名至故說為名」者，答。若名隨上古來所共立名勢力於義轉變，故說為名。若無色四蘊隨根、境勢力於義轉變。轉變同名，故說為名。以此四蘊必依根緣境，故言隨根、境勢力。

[On the Kośa's statement:] "Because it changes [and applies to its object] in accordance with the established designation... it is said to be 'name'": this is the answer. If it is a name (nāman), it changes and applies to an object in accordance with the power of designations established by consensus since antiquity; hence it is called "name". As for the four non-material aggregates, they change and apply to an object in accordance with the power of sense faculties and sense fields. Since their changing and applying is identical to that of a name, they are called "name". Because these four aggregates must rely on faculties and take sense fields as conditions, it is said that they follow the power of faculties and sense fields.
