"The sixth, mental contact [...] is therefore termed extensive": this explains the second line. Contact associated with the sixth, mental consciousness, is termed "linguistic designation" (adhivacana). As for why it is named "linguistic designation": speech is sound and does not have the capacity to express, whereas name possesses expression and surpasses speech, hence it is termed "surpassing speech" (adhivacana / linguistic designation). Another explanation: this name takes speech as its predominant condition in order to express, hence it is termed adhivacana. Another explanation: "adhi" means augmentation; due to cognizing names, language is augmented. Another explanation: by the power of names, speech is made superior, hence it is called adhivacana. This name is an extensive object cognized by mental consciousness; therefore, with respect to its object, it is named "linguistic designation contact". "Contact of linguistic designation" is a tatpuruṣa compound. Why is it termed an extensive object? For example, eye-consciousness can only apprehend blue, but not the name of blue, whereas mental consciousness apprehends blue and also apprehends the name of blue. After mental consciousness cognizes the object together with the five consciousnesses, it further cognizes its name; hence it is called "extensive".
